Though the third season of Shameless has so far not been up to par, the episode, Survival of the Fittest has proved that it can certainly come up with a good show.
Frank coming across as a good person is something that everyone had not expected at all. Though Frank being a good father to his kids was known from certain glimpses in the past, they all turned out to be his acts to make everyone believe him. And that his drinking problem would be the end of him was an already confirmed fact. But when his downfall would happen and how the repercussions will reflect on the cast is something nobody knows at present.
And in this episode the much awaited debacle finally seemed to happen. The sudden shock that Frank gets makes him walk dazedly but whether it would pull him out of his drinking habit or not cannot be guessed at, as he could easily have gone to the nearest bar to drown his sorrows. But he is certainly a good father to his kids, which seems to be the only redeeming point for him. He is happy that Lip has finally made it through high school.
And all through the season Frank and Carl have got close together and the scene where Carl shaves Frank’s head to make him better was good to watch though it seemed a bit odd and embarrassing too. Jimmy’s whereabouts is still not known but he may well be still stranded on a boat. And Fiona not actually in touch with Jimmy, is wondering about his fate. Jimmy not telling Fiona about his other life does not make any sense, as the Gallaghers are good at get-ting people out of trouble. But it turned out to be a good thing that Jimmy had not revealed about his secret to her.
Though Fiona is forever on the lookout for her family, she has also tried to look at her life from a different perspective and searching for a better future. And Jimmy’s final goodbye to her coming in the form of monetary gift, Fiona was able to put her life in order and get pro-moted to the sales division. She even bids goodbye to Jimmy through one final voicemail.
Ian’s next step is the final part of the episode. He goes instead of Lip to enlist in the army, as Lip has a scholarship to study in MIT. As it is difficult for Lip to be at both the places, the result could well end Ian’s dream of joining the army. And the fourth season beginning is certainly a good thing now.
